Concrete is one of those surfaces most people never think about painting, right up until they see a driveway or a garage floor done properly. A tired, stained slab can drag down the look of an otherwise smart home, and a coat of paint over well-prepared concrete makes the whole place feel cared for. I paint concrete right across Melbourne's western suburbs, from driveways, paths and porches through to garage floors, verandahs, and concrete and retaining walls. Same approach as every other job I do: proper preparation first, honest advice about whether it's worth doing, and you deal directly with me from the first walkthrough to the final coat.

On concrete, the preparation is the job

Paint fails on concrete for one reason: it was put onto a surface that wasn't ready for it. Concrete is dense, often sealed from when it was poured, and outdoor slabs collect years of dirt, oil, moss and tyre marks. If you paint straight over that, it lifts and peels within a season and you've wasted your money. So I spend the time up front: a thorough clean to strip back the grime, degreasing where oil has soaked in, filling and making good any cracks or chips, and priming so the coats actually key into the surface instead of sitting on top of it. It's slower and less glamorous than rolling on colour, but it's the difference between a finish that lasts and one you're redoing next year.

Driveways, garages and outdoor concrete

Outdoor concrete is the first thing people see when they pull up to your home, and it's often the most neglected surface on the property. Painting a driveway, path or porch is a simple way to sharpen up the front of a house, especially alongside a fresh coat on the render or weatherboards. Garage and shed floors can be painted too, with a paint made for floors. Before anything starts, we talk through exactly what's being done, including whether the slab is in good enough condition to be worth painting.

What I don't do

Concrete work covers a lot of trades. I'm a painter, so what I do is paint concrete. I don't do epoxy floor coatings, and I don't do concrete sealing, resurfacing, grinding or line marking. Those are different trades with different equipment, so if that's what you're after, a specialist in that trade is the right call. If you want concrete painted and prepared the right way, that's what I do.

Can you paint my driveway?
Yes, driveways are part of my concrete painting work, along with paths, garage floors, verandahs, and concrete and retaining walls. Whether painting suits your driveway depends on the slab: clean, sound concrete takes paint well, while crumbling or badly cracked concrete may not, and a steep slope affects which paint suits it. New concrete needs at least 28 days to cure first. Text photos of the driveway to 0424 338 506, including close-ups of any oil stains, cracks or old paint. Quotes are free and there's no obligation.
How much does it cost to paint a driveway?
There's no standard price for painting a driveway, because it depends on the size of the slab and how much preparation it needs. Oil stains need degreasing, smooth concrete may need etching, cracks need filling, and loose old paint has to be scraped off before any paint goes on. The product, the number of coats, and whether paths or a garage floor are done at the same time also change the price. Can concrete walls and retaining walls be painted?
Yes, concrete and masonry walls, including retaining walls, can usually be painted with an exterior paint suited to masonry. Haymes' exterior paint data sheet says new concrete must cure for 28 days, then be pressure washed and left to dry, free of formwork release agents and efflorescence (white, powdery salt deposits), before a masonry sealer and the topcoats go on. The surface must be dry when it's painted, so a wall that stays damp needs the cause looked at first. Can you paint over a sealed or previously painted driveway?
Often, yes, but each needs different preparation. Previously painted concrete needs an adhesion test, with loose, flaking paint scraped off, before a paving paint such as Haymes' QuickPave goes on. Plain concrete that has been sealed needs etching so the paint can grip, according to Haymes' guide to painting driveways, and QuickPave isn't recommended for sealed patterned or stencilled concrete. A concrete sealer is a separate protective coating, not a paint, and I don't do sealing or resurfacing. If you know or suspect your driveway has been sealed, mention it when you text photos to 0424 338 506.
How long does a painted driveway last?
Usually about 3 to 7 years before it needs a clean and recoat, according to hipages' November 2025 driveway painting guide, and longer on low-traffic driveways in mild climates. The guide says the lifespan depends on the preparation, the type of coating, sun exposure, traffic, tyre scuffing from tight turns and maintenance. Paint over dirty, oily or poorly prepared concrete can start lifting early, so ask what preparation is included before you book. This is a general guide, not a promise about any particular job.
